“Something More is a tender ambient EP from American artist Go Outside (Andrew Shaffer) and British producer Winter Silhouette (Lewis Broad-Ashman). Blending soft textures, drifting melodies, and a deep sense of introspection, the EP explores themes of longing, hope, and quiet discovery.”

I teamed up with Italian producer Domy Castellano to make this musical ode to strolling through the garden on a summer evening, running your hand through the tall fronds of grasses and flowers.

My third full-length album. Released digitally and on CD. I didn’t know when I started writing it that it would end up being a “musical journal” of the year my wife was diagnosed with breast cancer.*
Your simple presence is enough
Sitting quietly with me
Head swimming, body broken
Reaching for anything solid
I find your hand
Resting quietly in mine
Your simple presence is enough

from the depths

September 27, 2024 – Valley View Records
The name, ‘from the depths’, refers to the foundational nature of our existence that’s beneath our ego, beneath the stories we tell about ourselves and the world around us. It refers to the connectedness and purposefulness that we share with all beings. It isn’t intellectual or philosophical thought. It’s just presence and being. And in this state there’s only relationship, movement, cause, effect.

An unexpected moment of inspiration, captured in this single-take, improvised synth line paired with a summer field recording of early evening crickets and birds.

That feeling when you sit on a nice little mossy patch by a stream, or lay out on a rock in the sun, or lean your back against a tree and just sink into the environment around you. Maybe it’s a drowsy, dreamy feeling. Maybe it’s an invigorating awareness of all the sights and sounds and aliveness of the place. Sometimes it provides some respite from the concerns of life, sometimes it brings feelings and stories to the surface where they can be processed and sorted. In either case it’s a feeling of being held by, and a part of, the natural energies of the world around us. That’s the feeling I was holding as the inspiration for these tracks.

With my cat as my audience, I performed the album start to finish as you hear it using just a few pieces of gear; Elektron Digitakt, Arturia Microfreak, Red Panda Labs Particle 2, Chase Bliss Audio Mood MkII, and guitar through a small Soundcraft mixer. It was recorded as a single stereo file into Logic Pro where I subsequently “mixed” and mastered.

“Our Home is a stunning 4-track release from ambient artists Hatsü and Go Outside. Atmospheric and uplifting in equal measure, the music envelops the listener in the sounds of nature alongside shimmering pads, organic instruments, and deep ambient tones. A beautiful reflection of label Echoes in the Valley’s nature-infused ambient music sensibility, Our Home is an EP not to be missed.”

Every part of us is experienced in relationship to every other part. In our minds we can conceptualize separation, but we are not a concept. Our existence is tangible, dynamic and consequential.
This album is a sonic reflection of the process of reconnecting to my felt sense of being in my own body and in the world.

July 28, 2023 – Valley View Records
I’ve spent most of my life feeling swept away, against my will, by the pace and mentality of our modern human world… unable to make peace with my surroundings and circumstances… unable to find my place in it. Now, a subtle shift is happening. A new seed of confidence and capability is sprouting. I’m building more capacity to see the world how it is without feeling overwhelmed, hopeless and alone.
I’m feeling less like a victim of my circumstances and more like an active participant that can shape the trajectory of my life. There’s a disillusionment that happens with every stage of development. To see the world in a new way I need to let go of old perspectives, old habits, old relationships. With new hope comes grief for what needs to fall away. These songs are a snapshot of the many emotions that make up this process.

March 03, 2023 – Mystery Circles
“‘Send / Return’ was formed through the mutual admiration and friendship of Wisconsin-based Wavefiler (Steve Zydek) and Vermont-based Go Outside (Andrew Shaffer). They found each other on Instagram posting snippets of plucky, tape-saturated, meandering melodies and textural washes. Through a series of communications back and forth, they quickly became friends and decided they would have a go at collaborating on an album as “audio penpals”.
It was written one track at a time; each previous track was used as inspiration for the next track. With this approach, each of their distinct styles blend to create a cohesive statement.”

This Bandcamp-only release was originally written as one extended track in July 2021, this collection tells a story of emotions in flux. I basically finished it and then moved on to other things for no discernible reason. After sitting on it for a year and a half I went back and said “Hey, I like this!”

This album is about change. I have gone through many changes in my short life; my physical environment, career, social groups, identities, ways of relating to myself and the world around me… This album isn’t about the force that causes that change, but the complex process of organizing myself around a new set of circumstances. In a small way this process happens every day. Occasionally I feel a pull to make dramatic changes. And sometimes I just wake up and realize that my old self and old life is quickly falling away, and it’s completely out of my control.

A sourdough culture is created when bacteria from the environment and human hands come together through intention, care and patience to create something nourishing. In some ways it feels that you are making something from nothing, but what you’re really doing is transforming something that is already there. Making art can feel like this same process. Work and re-work, reflect and adjust, feel and act, until something becomes useful, inspiring, connecting, nourishing.

February 12, 2021 – self-release
This is a collection of songs based around a single sound source. The synthesizer that provides every sound you’re hearing is the Arturia Microfreak. There is a particular oscillator called the modal oscillator that provides the plucky, nasal sound that you hear throughout the album.
This album is about connecting with the rhythm of life. It’s hard to describe or even point to, but you can feel it when you’re in the groove.
